“State police identified the man who they say shot and injured two law enforcement officers Saturday night as Demecio Cardenas Jr., 32, of Los Angeles, Calif. Cardenas, who police said wanted in California as a fugitive from justice for an outstanding warrant for a parole violation, was also injured in the incident and is being treated at a Portland-area hospital. His condition status is unavailable.
The incident began with an Albany-area woman calling 911 about 10:25 p.m. Saturday to report an armed man was in her backyard. State police spokesman Lt. Gregg Hastings said based on the information she gave, the woman appeared to have known the suspect. The caller reported that the man left in a possibly stolen green 1994 two-door Acura Integra with Oregon plates. Eight minutes after the call was dispatched, Benton County deputies spotted the vehicle, and the driver led them on a chase along Highway 20 into rural Benton County. About 10:37 p.m., the driver lost control of the vehicle at Independence Highway and Northwest Springhill Drive, then fled on foot into heavy brush. Area agencies responded to assist in establishing a perimeter. A Salem police dog unit arrived to help find the fleeing man. As the search began before midnight, the suspect emerged from the brush and he and officers exchanged gunfire. Hastings said it was unclear who shot first but that police think Connolly didn’t fire his weapon and a second unidentified deputy did.
The two law enforcement shot were Cpl. Salem Police Cpl. Andrew Connolly, 46, and Benton County Sheriff’s Sgt. David Peterson, 29.”
