“Around midnight Friday, off-duty Rochester Police officer Francisco Santiago was driving home on Joseph Avenue when he was rear-ended by 23-year-old Jamal Dixon and 22-year-old Caleb Galletly.
Sheppard said Santiago was talking to the men about filing an accident report when they took off. Santiago followed them and called 911.
That’s when Sheppard said Dixon and Galletly approached the off-duty officer’s car and began punching him in the head.
“At that point in time, the officer fired several rounds … to defend himself,” Sheppard said.
Sheppard says Santiago used his personal gun to shoot Dixon in the leg and Galletly in the chest and lower body. The two men who were shot ran, but were arrested on a nearby street.
Santiago, Dixon and Galletly were all taken to the hospital for treatment. Dixon has since been released. Galletly remains in the hospital, but is expected to recover.
Two other officers were also hurt while responding to the original scene. They crashed into another car at Wilkins St. and Pardee St. The two officers and driver of the other car had minor injuries.”
