Fortville, IN police shoot and kill man who shot back

“A Fortville police officer was shot in the head and possibly the chest about midnight near 79th Street and Carroll Road in Lawrence, according to radio dispatchers.

The officer, identified as Matt Fox, according to WTHR, attempted to pull over a vehicle around 11:30 p.m. Friday night at 800 North and 700 West in Hancock County, according to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Kendale Adams. The suspect initially stopped and then fled. The pursuit stopped in a housing subdivision at the intersection of High View Drive and Clearview Lane in Lawrence.

Adams said the suspect exited his vehicle and struck the officer with an ambush-style attack.

The injured officer was conscious and alert after the shooting, according to a dispatcher with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department. The officer provided a description of the suspect to assisting officers before being transported to Methodist Hospital. The officer’s condition has been upgraded to good.

About an hour later, the suspected shooter was shot and killed in a gun battle not far from where the Fortville officer was shot, the dispatcher said, citing the Lawrence Police Department.”|head
