7/8 – “No pursuit” preceding police shooting of a man in Denton, Texas

“Denton police shot a man after he refused to drop his rifle early Sunday morning, said Ryan Grelle, spokesman for the Denton Police Department.

People told police they heard several shots fired at about 2:30 a.m. near Dunes Street, Grelle said. They gave police a description of the vehicle, he said, which officers saw leaving as they arrived.

Grelle said there was never a pursuit.

Police followed the vehicle until it pulled into the 3300 block of Hartlee Field Road.

“[The man] got out of his vehicle holding a rifle,” Grelle said.

Officers gave the man commands to drop his weapon but he didn’t comply and he was shot, he said.”
