Sheriff Leon Lott said the shooting happened after Deputy Reginald Grant went to a motel and thought he saw a domestic dispute around 4 a.m. Thursday.
Lott says Grant confronted the man, who ran away. The officer caught the man and they struggled. During the fight, the unidentified suspect attempted to use the officers tazer against him, striking the officer with only one of the two necessary prongs to use it.
Lott says the deputy pulled out the prong, and continued to fight as the suspect attempted to get the officer’s gun from his holster. When he was unsuccessful, he again got hold of the tazer and pointed it at the officer. The sheriff says the deputy shot the suspect multiple times after his Taser was taken a second time. .
Authorities say the deputy was treated at the scene for minor injuries to his knee and arm, including bites.
The man died at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. His name has not been released.“
